The flooding in Panyagor, Dhiam Dhiam and other towns pushed local communities to seek higher ground. 

According to the United Nations, roughly two-thirds of the population fled to more stable, dry ground and those who remained in the flood zones spent much of their time knee-deep in contaminated water.

Women who are already vulnerable face the worst of climate change impacts

including Indigenous women, the elderly, LGBTIQ+ people, women and girls with disabilities,

migrant women, and those living in rural, remote, conflict and disaster-prone areas

 – including Indigenous women, the elderly, LGBTIQ+ people, women and girls with disabilities, migrant women, and those living in rural, remote, conflict and disaster-prone areas (U.N., 2022).

Alessandra Korap Munduruku recently won the Goldman Environmental Prize for her work in the Amazon.

When I met her in 2021 she said that Indigenous People were slowly losing their territory

and with nowhere left to fish and harvest palm fronds she wanted to do something.

As a woman, however, joining the male tribal meetings was frowned upon,

But in 2015, Korap said she broke from tradition,

joined the chiefs and spoke about her concerns about public officials and businesses.

She said she participated in meetings outside her village and protested against the demarcation of their land

as well as infrastructure that they deemed hazardous to their territories.

However, throughout Brazil, Indigenous women are 

working tirelessly to defend the rainforest and Indigenous land

 from destruction with outstanding courage and bravery.

, are illegally mining Indigenous land and causing deforestation and water pollution, plunging mercury into the air, rivers, and water sources, contaminating the the food chain, and poisoning those who live off the land.
